 Volunteer In Rio With Us!

Real work, getting real results, in the real Rio. Teach, mentor and live in the favela. This is real cultural immersion. Be more than just a tourist, be an active member of the community. We are a unique one-of-a kind project in Rio offering a diverse and comprehensive education to children in our community. We do it all for free using an amazing team of international volunteers from diverse backgrounds. Our volunteers want real work abroad experience. They want to volunteer in a real organization that is doing meaningful work, and one that provides an experience that really does immerse them into the community. Our volunteers do not just drop in and drop out. They live and work in the favela! Volunteers work hard during the week and are challenged! Our work is real and comes with expectations. Our volunteers have plenty of fun too. That is the reward. Doing truly meaningful work during the week with your team, and then enjoying all that makes Rio de Janeiro so incredible too. Our volunteer program is perfect for a person wanting real work abroad experience in a NGO. Perfect for a person that loves a challenge, loves children, and a person truly dedicated to making a real tangible difference in a very challenged community.

If you would like to volunteer with us the process starts by reading this, completing the contact form, and then sending it to us. We will reply and send you an application, then schedule a time to talk.

Project Favela International Volunteer Program Quick Facts

We accept volunteers for a minimum of 3 weeks and volunteers can stay for up to 3 months. It is also possible for a volunteer to stay for up to 6 months.

Volunteers live together in the favela in our volunteer house. It is simple and primitive. No better and no worse than our neighbors. The house is safe, cozy, has a full kitchen, common area, wifi, and a deck to take in some sun and relax.

Volunteers DO NOT need to be teachers. We will teach how to be a teaching ninja if you can bring some creativity, dedication, energy, and commitment. Our program is great for individuals that are confident, outgoing, independent, and very self motivated. Our volunteer program is great for those looking to do real meaningful work with children. People looking for a real challenge with big rewards.

Volunteers work hard during the week on average 6 hours per day plus planning and preparation. During the week it is all about the project. Weekends are for having fun and taking in all that makes Rio incredible.

The classes/subjects a volunteer will teach, or the teaching/mentoring team the volunteer will be on are determined after the volunteer arrives and has a chance to watch all the classes and activities in the project. Volunteers can work with younger children, older children and even adults in the evenings. We also partner with an amazing futebol project, surfing, martial arts, and capoeria group. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in these programs as well when they are not teaching.

Is Rocinha safe? YES, very! Rocinha is an amazing thriving community in a great location. Close to everything with Metro access. 15 minute walk to one of Rio's best beaches. Rocinha is loaded with great restaurants, cafes, bars, and markets. There are pharmacies, banks, pizzerias, stores of all kinds and even sushi.
